In this brewing video we’re making a brown ale as a homage to two of our favorite beers, the Columbus Nut Brown by Columbus Brewing Company and the Face Down Brown by Telluride Brewing Company. However, the recipe is modeled off of the Moose Drool Brown Ale by Big Sky Brewing Company. Before we start brewing, we teach you about the Brown Ale style guidelines found in the book “Designing Great Beers” by Ray Daniels while we drink a Brown Ale from Hi-Wire Brewing Company called Bed of Nails. This is a perfect beer for those that don’t want a lighter ale, but don’t want a super dark porter or stout. A Brown Ale is a happy medium. This video also teaches you how to grind grains by walking you through double crushing, grinder gap size, and how all this impacts the efficiency of your mash. The Brown Ale recipe we created uses Pale Malt as a base along with some Black Patent Malt and Chocolate Malt for added flavor and color. We use East Kent Goldings and Willamette to give our finished beer some bitterness. This recipe pairs great with meats like venison, duck, lamb, and pork. We also announce in this video that we’re selling fermentation buckets! Check out the resources below for buckets, brewing equipment, a full recipe, and an educational article about Brown Ale history.
