In this homebrewing video, we were planning on making a double IPA, or Imperial IPA, but we forgot to add the dextrose (sugar), so it turned out to be more like a one and a half IPA. Fortunately, it’s just homebrewing, so it doesn’t really matter. Whether you follow our accidental recipe or the full recipe you’re guaranteed to have a tasty beer and have fun making it. For this double IPA we use pale malt as our base and then a bunch of Comet, Amarillo, and Chinook hops throughout the boil and as hopstand additions for a signature IPA flavor with just the right amount of bitterness. Because of the bitterness that IPA’s typically have, we recommend pairing this homebrew recipe with salty cured meats like ham, charcuterie, and sausage. The saltiness of these meats will pair well with the bitterness of the IPA and the hop character should pair nicely with any seasonings you use. Our finished beer turned out great, we recommend following along with this tutorial and brewing your own IPA at home. Drink it young as well! This walkthrough video also goes over what the actual definition of a double IPA is in this video, this is based off of a book we have called “IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes, and the Evolution of India Pale Ale” by Mitch Steele. Check out the resources below for this book, a full recipe, brewing equipment, and an educational article about the history of the double IPA style.
